Valve stems let you fill and check tire pressure, and the cap keeps dirt and moisture out of the valve core so it seals properly. Swapping plain plastic caps for aluminum ones is a small detail that finishes off a set of wheels, and the right replacement stem matters on specialty racing wheels where a standard stem will not fit.
